Zodiac Suite LEO
LEO July 23rd - August 22nd. In this, the third version of the Zodiac Suite, I have combined the universal, abstract symbols with the traditional fugurative images to represent the signs. The prints feature an A to Z of historically significant figures born under each one. I have also included mainly painted portraits of those whose names appear in each alphabet text of people born under these signs. In 1839 Robert Cornelius produced the first dagueiritype self-portrait, which is generally accepted as the first photographic portrait print. Prior to this date all likenesses had been sculpted, drawn or painted. I have endevoured to continue this tradition by selecting painted portraits, unless as in the case of many actors, especially those from the silent screen era, only photographs and stills exist. I have limited the selection of characters to painters, sculptors, philosophers, writers, poets, thespians, playrights, scientists and political or military leaders. My knowledge of the significance and meaning of the Zodiac signs is probably quite limited, so I have relied on the internet to provide ranges of colours that are associated with each symbol. The abstract element of the signs has been hand drawn using Adobe Illustrator. The vector figuratrive elements have been purchased from their respective copyright holders, while the portraits are usually sections from famous paintings, drawings and more recently photographs. Each image is a mono-print containing different colour ways and styles of the portraits. The complete suite comprises 12 copies as works on paper, or 6 suites containing 12 on stretched canvases with an optional diamond dust on the figurative elements. The prints from each suite are available as single pieces. |
